Fruit Tree Planting Requirements
We are interested in planting with community organizations, nonprofits, schools, and individual residents and property owners. In all cases, each tree planting site should be at least 8 ft by 8 ft, must receive full to partial sun, and should have access to water with a hose or irrigation from your property. We focus on planting in neighborhoods that do not have adequate tree canopy.
Please review our Programs page for information on our plantings.
If you are leasing your home or apartment, speak with your landlord about planting a fruit tree for the community as this is a long term project and we need the landowner on board. Trees need to be watered consistently especially when they are young. Depending on type of tree and age at time at planting, trees can take between two to five years to begin fruiting and can live for 30 to hundreds of years old.
We like to plant trees in clusters at an organization or on a block to have the greatest impact and facilitate sharing harvests amongst neighbors. If you are interested in planting and caring for fruit trees in your yard or at your community organization in Oakland, please write us at with a description of the kind of planting you want to do, how many trees you want, who is involved, and the best way to reach you and we will be in contact to talk about it.
Also, feel free to contact us if you have questions.
We are currently accepting tree stewards and sites on a rolling basis.
